Ladies City Bakery Challenge May 14, 2013

posted May 20, 2013, 1:12 PM by office@birchbankgolf.com

On Tuesday May 14th, 68 ladies representing both the Day and Business Ladies
sections, hit the links for the annual 9-hole competition between their two
clubs.
For the past 31 years, Rino & Grace Merlo, owners of City Bakery,
have sponsored this event and donated many, many packages of the
ever-popular pancake mix for door prizes.   In 1982, City Bakery donated a
silver tray to be awarded each year to the side with the lowest average net
score.  The Day Ladies won the challenge this year for the 20th time with a
net average of 40.15, with the Business Ladies right on their heels with a
net average score of 40.26.  A team best ball competition is also held at
this event.  Winning team with a net best ball of 26 was Carol Babcock,
Brenda Clark, Roberta DeLuca and Dana Haas.
As this was the last year that  City Bakery will be sponsoring this event,
Jeri Santarossa, Club Captain,  and Michele Hansen, Business Ladies Chair,
presented Grace Merlo with a  beautiful hanging basket in appreciation of
their many years of sponsorship.

Congratulations to Birchbank Junior Members - Tyler McKay & Brenan Moroney

posted May 20, 2013, 11:47 AM by office@birchbankgolf.com

This past May Long weekend, was very busy with the BCGA Development Camp, two junior circuits and qualifying for the BC Junior.  The camp was a great success and a big thanks go out to local pro Kevin Nesbitt for all his help and to the BC Team Coach, Matt Palsenbarg for his insights.  I hope all the kids enjoyed their time.

Birchbanks, Tyler McKay, turned out to be too much for the rest of the field in the two events.   On Saturday at Redstone, in cold, rainy conditions Tyler was the only player to break 80, posting a 79.   Carson Arcuri from Granite Point was the next closest competitor with a round of 82.  The flight winners were Brenan Moroney in the 17 - 18 year division, Carson Arcuri in the 15 - 16 year division and Kaden Lane from Christina Lake in the 14 and under division.

On Sunday at Birchbank, Tyler posted an even par 72 to win the overall title by four shots over Brenan Moroney who took the 17 and 18 year division for the second straight day.  David Launier from Rock Creek won the 15 and 16 year division and Kaden Lane took the 14 and under.

The BC Junior team for Zone 1 was selected based on the two day totals.  The team is as follows:
1.  Tyler McKay  79, 72 = 151
2.  Brenan Moroney  86, 76 = 162
3.  David Launier  88, 84 = 172
4.  Isaac Janzen  89 , 86 = 175 (Playoff

This past weekend Riley Rollick from the Salmo GC took full advantage of playing on his home course as he came out with two shot victory over Brenan Moroney of Birchbank and Aiden Browell of Champion Lake.  All the kids struggled with the small Salmo greens, but Riley was still able to make three birdies on the day.  He finished with a final score of 75.  Both Brenan and Aiden posted identical rounds of 77.

This coming weekend the Junior Circuit will be at Redstone on Saturday and Birchbank on Sunday.  These are great golf courses to play.  We welcome all kids to come out and try the junior circuit.  Please email zone1juniorgolf@yahoo.ca if you are interested in playing.

In other junior news, Tyler McKay represented the zone well this past weekend as he finished 35 in the very strong field at the CN Pacific in Courtney on Vancouver Island.  72 kids from all across Canada played, included all of Canadas National Junior Team.  Tyler was able to navigate the very long, 7000 yard Crown Island Course, with rounds of 75,78, 76.  Kevin Kwon from Swaneset GC won the tournament with rounds of 66, 71, 66
